Horace Greeley began his musical instruction at the age of three, studying piano with Ethel Leginska, a student of Theodore Leschetizky. Taking up the bassoon nine years later, he stopped studying piano in order to concentrate on the bassoon. He studied bassoon with Frederick W. Moritz (Principal Bassoon of the Los Angeles Philharmonic). As that study unfolded, he studied theory and composition with a student of Nadia Boulanger, analysis with a student of Heinrich Schenker; and conducting with Frederick Zweig, a former Principal Conductor of the Berlin Opera. Later, as Principal Bassoon of the Blomstedt International Conducting Workshop (held at Loma Linda University), he studied conducting with Maestro Blomstedt during the fifteen years that the workshop was held.
In support of both his study of conducting, and his growing work doing concert and recording work for Steinway, Bosendorfer, Baldwin, Yamaha, and Kawai, Mr. Greeley attended or participated in a number of Master Classes.

The lawyer Nikolay Kondratyev (1832-1887) was first introduced to Tchaikovsky in 1864 at the estate of Prince Aleksey Golitsyn. They became fast friends in 1870, when the Kondratyev family moved to Moscow for the winter. Tchaikovsky was a frequent guest at the Kondratyev Moscow household, and he also visited the family estate near Kharkov on a regular basis. In the countryside he worked on his operas The Oprichnik (1870–72) and Vakula the Smith (1874), his Symphony No. 3 (1875), as well as his Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony (1871).
