John Ross entered the Royal Navy as a first-class volunteer on 11 Nov. 1786 and served in the Mediterranean aboard the Pearl until December 1789. The following year he was transferred to the Impregnable, stationed at Portsmouth. On 13 March 1805 he received his lieutenant’s commission, and later that year was seriously wounded in a naval engagement under the batteries of Bilbao, Spain.
