Phoenix Theatre was originally founded as the Phoenix Players by Harry Behn, Katherine Wisner McCluskey and Mrs. Maie Bartlett Heard in , making it the oldest arts organizations in Arizona and one of the oldest operating arts organizations in the country.

Harry was straight out of the drama program at Harvard University. Katherine ran her own drama school here and Maie was the wife of Dwight Heard, publisher of the Arizona Republican (the predecessor of the Republic.)
