He joined the British army after they took control of the Maluku islands from the Dutch, and led a rebellion against the Dutch after the islands were returned to Dutch rule in 1816. Pattimura and his lieutenants seized Fort Duurstede in 1817, killing the Dutch inhabitants, and Pattimura was later declared leader of the Maluku people. However, he was eventually captured and hanged by the Dutch in 1817, later becoming a symbol of Maluku and Indonesian independence.
