MS. DIANE REHMThanks for joining us I'm Diane Rehm. A Washington Post - ABC News Poll out this week offers mixed news for President Obama. While deepening economic fears have pushed his approval rating to a near record low the president stills holds an early edge over GOP contenders for 2012. It's a far cry from the overwhelming popularity he rode in on to the White House two years ago.

The relatively positive press coverage that Senator Barack Obama enjoyed early in the campaign began to turn negative later in the primary season and references to the senator’s “youth and inexperience” appear to be on the rise, according to a new study that examined media coverage of the presidential race.
The study, which focused on how the press has covered the candidates’ personal narratives, also challenged the notion that Mr. Obama received more positive coverage than his rival, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. In fact, when it came to character, the tone of the reporting was about the same, with both candidates receiving about twice as much positive press as negative between Jan. 1 and Mar. 9.
“The trajectory of the coverage, however, began to turn against Obama, and did so well before questions surfaced about his pastor Jeremiah Wright,” the authors of the study wrote. “Shortly after Clinton criticized the media for being soft on Obama during a debate, the narrative about him began to turn more skeptical — and indeed became more negative than the coverage of Clinton herself.”
